Day 3 - Monday May 16, 2005

We pulled away from the hotel around 8AM and hopped on the interstate once again. Today we ended up stopping at the National Memorial in Oklahoma City.

We spent about an hour or so there. The first picture is the entrance. The second shows the time of 9:03 on the wall; one minute after the bomb went off. The other side of the reflecting pool shows the same type of wall with "9:01"; one minute before the bomb exploded. The pool is supposed to represent the period of 9:02 "frozen" in time. The third picture shows sculptures of office chairs. They represent each person killed and each row is which floor the person was on in the building. There is a whole lot more to this memorial. If you're interested, take a look here.

After our brief visit, we got back onto I-40 for more superslabbin'. Wouldn't ya know... another poorly paved road. Anyhow, we landed in Weatherford, OK for lunch:

Cherokee Restaurant

We were beaten up by the crosswinds for a good part of the day. It got pretty annoying after a while. I could see in my rear view mirror how Dave and Jeff were getting pushed over by the wind on their Wings.

Eventually we hit the Texas border at about 2PM CST. Yeeeeehaw!

Just by pure coincidence, we pulled off the interstate trying to find a bathroom and came across the midpoint of old Rt 66 in Adrian, TX. Really! I'm not making it up! Here's the pictures to prove it:

We actually followed along side of the old Rt 66 at many points. I could sometimes make out where it was and how it suddenly dead ends at certain points. Fascinating! If you're interested in this, take a look at this web site.

A random shot of scenery in Texas during a a quick stop:

Hitting Mountain Time at the New Mexico border at about  6:30PM CST (5:30 MST).

At the Days Inn in New Mexico. The second picture oozes irony. You'll figure out why later.

 View from the room

Jeff and I had the good fortune to find the only hot spot in Santa Rosa this night... complete with a drunk trucker looking for a ride back to his rig a few miles up the road. Luckily, one of the 3 whole people in the place saved us and took him away. Yep, it was a party.
